How it Works
Using a combination of therapeutic skills and instrumentation, therapists at Biofeedback Institute teach their patients to bring under control certain psychophsiological processes previously thought to be involuntary, such as heart rate, breathing, vascular and muscular control, peripheral body temperature and certain psychological states (brain waves) -Biofeedback requires motivation on the patient's part. Therapists may make recommendations on diet, exercise and certain lifestyle changes.
Biofeedback is a short-term intervention, results are generally seen from 8 to 12 sessions. Most major insurance companies cover biofeedback at 80 - 100%. The Institute's standard fee is $145 per 45 minutes session. Sliding scale fees, assignments of benefits and workmen's compensation cases are accepted for qualified individuals, and senior citizens receive a 25% discount. The initial visit is with Dr. von Bozzay who will complete a phsychophysiological profile to determine the possible success of the biofeedback intervention for the particular disorder. A treatment plain is then established.

In the past five years exciting changes and discoveries have occurred in biofeedback (applied psychophysiology) and behavioral medicine. Especially the rediscovery of EEG Neurofeedback (electoencephalography) training that can be more sophisticated and effective with new technology computerized interfaces and clear training protocols.
These new breakthroughs include:
1. The landmark studies of Dr Gene Penniston in Colorado, showing no relapse or rehospitalization in a four year follow-up and significant changes in stable personality test scores and beta endorphin blood assays in servere alcoholics treated with a unique alpha/theta protocol when compared to the traditionally treated matched control group who all relapsed and were rehospitalized within fifteen months.
2. The ongoing work in Beta training with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities of Dr Joel Lubar in Tennessee and Dr Michael Tansey in New York showing dramatic improvement in school performance, attention and concentration as well as social/home behavior ratings.
3. Intriguing pilot studies in EEG pattern training for PTSD, OCD, Unipolar Depression and Closed Head Injury to add to the well documented effective treatment of Major Motor Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders.
4. Most major insurance companies are covering outpatient biofeedback treatment as a medical procedure at 80-100% reimbursement and HMOs are increasingly referring to or establishing their own biofeedback service. With the current health care cost crisis and demand for accountability, this trend toward utilizing cost-effective alternatives in increasing.
5. Research in all areas of biofeedback continues to grow and improve showing efficacy studies in hypertension, fecal and urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal disturbances, neuromuscular re-education. More books and articles about the scientific support and clinical use of biofeedback/behavioral medicine services will continue to expand.
